Installation Instructions

Software Licensing Options

The licensing method affects the installation progress. You can use one of the following licensing methods:

  • NetVID license

Primary way for delivering licenses. Vertex Online License Service delivers the license automatically. A separate license file or a protection module is not needed.

  • License Server

A specific Vertex License Server software for reserving Vertex applications and add-on options for the users within customer premises. The license server must be agreed upon when the software product is ordered. It will be delivered separately with installation instructions..

  • Protection Module (HASP) and License File

A detachable (USB) HASP protection module and a license file (license.txt) working in pairs.

  • License File Tied to the Computer's Identification Code (Virtual ID)

A time limited license file (license.txt). A protection module is not needed.

Licensing options have been described in details at the end of the document, see License Guide.

Before Installation

If previous software versions have been installed on your computer, the installation program asks what you would like to do:

  • Select installation, if you wish to install a new program.
  • Select update, if you wish to update the program.

If you are installing or updating a new version to replace the old one, make sure that the previous Vertex G4 version is not in use!

Scandinavian characters or spaces should not be used in the installation path name. An example of an installation folder:

  • C:\vx[..] (one user installation)
  • C:\Vertex\vx[..]_srv (network server installation)

[..] = label of Vertex application, for example g4, g4plant, g4pi.

Installation Options

The available installation options are:

One User Installation

One user is an installation in which the software is installed to a single workstation. The software is used only on the workstation in question.

Installation to a Network Server

Network server installation is an installation in which all workstation license users use the common software environment on the network server. The created documents are instantly available to all designers.

Network User

When using the network server, a network user license is installed for each user. You can install the network user license by using the Network User option of the installation program, but it is recommended that you use the client.bat program as described in the instructions below.

Installation to a Network Server

Network server installation is an installation in which all workstation license users use the common software environment on the network server. The created documents are instantly available to all designers.

The installation order is:

  1. Install the network server.
  2. Do the installation on each workstation.

If a license server is included in the agreement, it is installed first. The license server software is delivered separately with installation instructions.

Starting the installation

The installation must be done physically on the server, not over the network.

  1. Create a folder on the network server (for example C:\Vertex), and share it to the network.
  2. Make sure that the work stations, which will use the network server, have the following permissions:
    • Full control to the folder (security).
    • Full control to the folder sharing (sharing).
  3. Test the functionality and permissions of the shared folder \\Server_name\Vertex\ on the work stations.
  4. Follow the instructions you have received to download the installation package, and save it to C:\TEMP folder, for example.

  5. Extract the compressed file: select the file, right-click and select Extract All…

  6. Start the installation or update by double-clicking the installation program install.exe in the extracted folder.

Installing the network server

  1. Select the language.
  2. Select Vertex Servers.
  3. Select Network Server.

  4. Accept the license agreement.
  5. If the installation program asks for the version to be updated, select either of the following:
    • Select New installation, if you wish to install a new program.

    • Select update, if you wish to update the program.

  6. The default installation folder is C:\vx[..]_srv. Change the installation folder to:
    \\Server_name\Vertex\vx[..]_srv

  7. The installation program asks if you would like to use a license server. If a license server is included in the agreement, select Yes. Otherwise, select No.
    • License server: No. The installation program will ask for the location of the license file license.txt.
      • If you are using a NetVID license, skip the questions by selecting Next and Yes.
      • If you are using a license file license.txt, browse to the folder where you have saved it.
      • You can also copy the license file to the user folder after the installation. In this case, skip the questions by selecting Next and Yes.
      • If the program does not ask for the file, it is already included in the installation package.
    • License server: Yes
      • The installation program asks for the license server's name visible in the network and the port number to which the Vertex License Server has been installed.
  8. The installation program asks for the default installation path for the network users. We recommend the default setting to prevent confusion.

The entire network server is installed on the server computer’s disc.

Installation on the Workstations

  1. On the workstation, run the client.bat in the networks server's installation folder. For example:
    \\Server_name\Vertex\vx[..]_srv\Client_Install\client.bat
  2. If the licensing method is something other than License Server, the installation program asks if you would like to install the HASP driver included in the installation package.
    • If you are using a NetVID license, select No.
    • If you are using a HASP module, and Vertex has been previously installed on the computer, select No. The driver has already been installed earlier and you do not have to reinstall it.

    • If you are using a HASP module, and this is the first time Vertex is installed on the computer, select Yes.

    • See Protection Module (HASP) and License File .
  3. If the Vertex file extensions (.vxp, .vxm, .vxz) have already been associated to a Vertex software, the installation program asks if you would like to change the association to the software now being installed. If you are installing the latest version of the same software, select Yes. If you are using different Vertex applications (for example BD and G4), select the association according to the application you mainly use.

The program creates the pre-defined folder on the workstation (the default installation path for the network users).

The files needed for starting the program are not copied to the workstation during installation. The necessary files will be copied from the network server when the network user license is started for the first time. So, the first start up will take some time.

Start the Vertex program on the workstation. If you are using a NetVID license, copy the activation code you received to the License activation code -field.

Files will be updated through the network server when necessary. When the network server is updated, all the workstations using the server will be updated automatically. For example, the service packs are only installed on the server.

A network server installation and a workstation installation can both be installed on the same computer.

License Guide

NetVID license

Vertex Online License Service delivers the license automatically. The license is tied to the computer's identification code. The computer must be connected to the internet for the program to be able to contact the Online license service. When the program is started for the first time, it asks for the license activation code. A link to a page where the activation code can be copied has been emailed to your company's Vertex contact person.

  1. Install the Vertex program.
  2. The installation program will ask for the location of the license file. A license file is not needed when using a NetVID license. Leave the field empty, and skip the question by selecting Next.
  3. Start the Vertex program. Copy the activation code you received to the License activation code field.

The user rights are checked from the Online license service whenever the program is started. If internet connection is not available, the program can be used off-line for 10 days. When the computer is connected to the internet, the 10 day period is restarted.

When 3 or less days is left of the period, the program will remind you about the expiring license.

Transferring a License

The license can be transferred to another computer. The computers must be connected to the internet. Before transferring the license, it must be deactivated or restored to the Online license service as follows:

  1. Select File > This Software Version.
  2. Click the Deactivate license button.
  3. Confirm deactivation by clicking OK.
  4. The activation code is displayed in the text field. Write down the code.
  5. Go to the other computer.
  6. If necessary, install the software to the other computer.
  7. Start the program, and enter the activation code in the License activation code text field.

Please note: Deactivate the license also before updating the operating system of the computer.

License Server

The license server must be agreed upon when the software product is ordered. It will be delivered separately with installation instructions.

A protection module, a license file or an activation code is not needed on the workstations using the license server.

Protection Module (HASP) and License File

A HASP protection module and a license file (license.txt) always work in pairs. The protection module is connected to the computer's USB port.

  • In one user installation, the protection module is connected to the workstation.
  • When a network server is used, the protection modules are connected to the workstations using the server.

HASP Driver

The need to install the driver for the protection module depends on whether the software has been previously installed to the computer or not.

Vertex has been installed previously

It is not necessary to reinstall the driver for a HASP module which has been connected to the computer during previous installation. Select No when the installation program asks if you would like to install the HASP driver included in the installation package.

Vertex is installed for the first time

When you install the software for the first time, install the HASP module driver as well. Select Yes when the installation program asks if you would like to install the HASP driver included in the installation package.

Installing the driver manually

If necessary, you can also install the driver included in the installation package manually:

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

If you extracted the installation package to C:\TEMP folder, run the command:

C:\TEMP\[installation_package_name]\bin\haspdinst[version].exe –i

For example, C:\TEMP\Vertex-G4-2018-24-0-04-en\bin\haspdinst760.exe –i

Wait until the driver is installed (Please wait..Operation successfully completed).

Please note: The driver cannot be installed inside the compressed file. You must first extract the file: select the compressed file, right-click and select Extract All...

Uninstalling the driver

Open Command Prompt as an administrator.

If you extracted the installation package to C:\TEMP folder, run the command:

C:\TEMP\[installation_package_name]\bin\haspdinst[version].exe -kp -r

Parameters of the command: -r = remove, -kp = kill processes accessing driver

Usually you can uninstall using a newer driver than the one that was installed.

License File

A link to a page where the license file can be downloaded has been emailed to your company's Vertex contact person. Save the license file to C:\TEMP folder, for example. Browser to the folder when you install the Vertex program.

If the file is not available at the installation stage, it can be saved in the program's user folder after the installation. For example:

  • in a single installation \vx[..]\user
  • in a network server installation \vx[..]_srv\user

[..] = label of Vertex application, for example g4, g4plant, g4pi.

License File Tied to the Computer's Identification Code (Virtual ID)

The license is always time-limited. A separate protection module is not needed.

[..] = label of Vertex application, for example g4, g4plant, g4pi.
